Notes In the cholera epidemic of 1849, Marie, her son Pierre, and two daughters-in-law died, all during the same month. Only three of Marie's ten children --- Augustin, Francis, and Elvire --- were living at the time of her death. Her personal property, which included four slaves, was sold when the estate was settled.3

Notes Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer , a seaport town in northwestern France. He was the fourth of eleven children. His brother Friar Jean Francois encouraged the sixteen-year-old Augustin to study arithmetic, foreign exchange, bookkeeping, commerce, and geography if he expected to enter the firm of a relative, Francois Cailliot. In 1761, Augustin joined his brother Antoine in the pirating of British ships. He was captured at Dunkirk and imprisioned in London. Following the peace treaty of 1763, he was released and returned home.3
