Tristram Coffin51 10th Great Grandfather
Born March 04, 1607/08, Brixton, Devon, England
Died October 02, 1681, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts
Parents Peter Coffin, Joan Kember
Notes Tristram Coffin was a constable in Brixton, Devon, England in 1641. He married Dionis Stevens of Brixton and they came to America with five children, his mother and two sisters in 1642. They stayed briefly at Salisbury, and then moved to Haverhill, Massachusetts. In 1644 he was allowed to keep an ordinary and sell wine and keep a ferry across from Salisbury, Massachusetts. In 1648 he removed to Newbury, returned to Salisbury by 1654, and was a founder of Nantucket in 1660.

The Coffin/Coffyn family descends from Sir Richard Coffyn, knight to William the Conqueror of Portledge, Devon, England.

Tristram sided with Charles I against Cromwell. One of his brothers was killed in battle. He lost his estate but escaped in 1642 to Massachusetts with his mother, two sisters, his wife, five children and enough resources to purchase land. He and five others bought Pentucket (now Haverhill) from the Indians. Six years later he moved to Newbury where he operated an inn, made wine and beer and operated a ferry. In 1654 he moved to Salisbury.

He and eight others bought Nantucket Island from Thomas Mayhew in 1659 for 30 pounds and two beaver hats. Mayhew retained a ten per cent interest. They introduced sheep expecting to use Indian labor as they had used peasants in England. By 1671 Tristram had become chief magistrate and owned one quarter of the island.
